My top storytelling podcasts of 2023
This year, my top podcast selections focused heavily on historical accounts, from brutal dictators in Europe, to dark and often unknown chapters of American history. The subjects of these series are sometimes controversial, but also very thought-provoking and worth listening to with an open mind. So, without further ado, here are my top picks.
Rachael Maddow Presents: Ultra
Griping, meticulously researched and extremely relevant for the political landscape we're currently living in. Maddow tells a complex story in a consumable format, stitching together insights from prominent historians to further bolster her case. This is an excellent series that sheds light on a dark and dangerous period in our history, and reminds us that keeping our democracy requires constant vigilance.
The Gun Machine
This excellent series walks through the history of gun development, use, advertising, and its effects on American society. The series is narrated by a former law enforcement officer and 'gun nut' who clearly knows and appreciates firearms, giving it greater credibility as it delves into the some of the darker aspects of the gun industry and gun culture.
Real Dictators
If you're a fan of history, as I am, this is a can't miss podcast! It delves deep into the history of some fo the most consequential characters in human history, expanding on them in such detail as you'd never get in a history classroom. Narrated by the excellent Paul McGann, the production quality of this podcast is truly without equal.
The Line
A thought-provoking look at the moral and ethical dilemmas faced by soldiers in the field. A very well produced podcast that covers "both sides" of the story, worth a listen.
