Movies I watched (and enjoyed) in 2023
I haven't seen all the movies released this year that I wanted to, notably haven't seen Napoleon yet, these are a few that I have seen and truly enjoyed. I’m not a movie snob, so don’t expect this list to be filled with the most critically acclaimed films of the year.
Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant
Thrilling and emotionally powerful. Gyllenhaal and Salim hit it out of the park, presenting the kind of emotional core missing in many war themed films. In giving us a reason to care, it is here that we can finally see Guy Richie's talent as a director of suspense. The second half does drag a little but the ride is incredibly gratifying.
The Creator
This movie exceeded my expectations with an entertaining story and impressive visual effects. That it pulled off such a visual feat at half the budget of many other films in the genre is equally impressive. Even though the ending is cut a little awkwardly, it doesn't overshadow my overall enjoyment of the film. It is a beautiful and original sci-fi gem that left me wanting more.
Oppenheimer
A good film with some spectacular set pieces and an Oscar caliber performance by Cillian Murphy, leading a superb ensemble. The main weakness of the film is that it is way too long. The endless interrogation of Oppenheimer just goes on and on and on. I really had hoped for a greater elaboration on the Manhattan project and less on the lurid details of Oppenheimer's life.
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves
This movie delivers a great fantasy story with plenty of humor, action and endearing characters. It is a fun film if you are a fan of the fantasy genre, though not on the same level as, for example, The Lord of the Rings.
Leave the World Behind
A solid suspense/thriller of a movie. It plays like an M. Night Shyamalan movie, but without the supernatural element and where we are left knowing as much as the characters do as they navigate unfolding events. The film has some interesting dynamics with the character relationships, who they choose to trust both when and why, and how they seek comfort and understanding when immersed in uncertainty. This movie is well worth checking out.
Knock at the Cabin
Is this the best M. Night Shyamalan movie? Not by a long shot, but is it worth watching, at least once? I think so. With captivating performance by Dave Bautista, there is enough suspence and mystery to keep you watching.
65
This is one of those films that gets a lot of hate, but that I enjoyed. The plot is predictable (and forgettable) but for me the acting, visual effects and sci-fi setting are enough to make worth the watch.
